Visit to the CLINSH monitoring barge ‘La Coruna’

Visit to the CLINSH monitoring barge ‘La Coruna’

CLINSH project manager Frank Appelman (Province of Zuid-Holland) and monitor expert Kinnie De Beule of the LIFE programme visited the barge ‘La Coruna’. This barge is part of the monitoring fleet of the CLINSH project.

Engine
At the office of Vink Diesel BV in Sliedrecht (NL), Kinnie and Frank were welcomed by Sander Langenberg and by Stenn Hertgers of NPS diesel. They presented the development of the marinisation and certification of the Paccar Euro VI truck engine. La Coruna is equipped with a new Paccar Euro VI MX-13 diesel engine. The DAF PACCAR MX-13 engine is marinised by VINK Diesel BV and equipped with an SCR catalytic converter and particulate filter. Its compact size makes it perfectly suitable for inland vessels with less space in the engine room.

Peter van Gompel of TNO – a Dutch organisation for applied scientific research – who was also present, explained some of the results of the measurements that TNO took on the ship.

Sailing in the environmental zone of Paris
After the visit at Vink Diesel BV, Kinnie and Frank were invited at the barge ‘La Coruna’ by the ship owners Thierry and Simone Vleminckx. The 55 meter ship left the mooring and set sail to Dordrecht as part of the measuring campaign of TNO on the ship. Thierry Vleminckx showed the steering area of the ship and explained that with this engine configuration La Coruna is one of the few inland waterway ships that is allowed to sail in the strict environmental zone of Paris.

Low NOx emissions
After returning in Sliedrecht, Thierry showed the engine room with the CLINSH monitoring equipment. He explained that he was very satisfied with the silent engine and that the fuel consumption has been substantially reduced. He was also pleased that the CLINSH continuous monitoring confirmed that the NOx emissions are very low. The emissions are well below the Stage V norm. CLINSH measurements showed that PM emissions had been substantially reduced as well. This was also visible on the exhaust which looked remarkably white.

After Simone Vleminckx showed the cabin with the salon it was time to say goodbye and thank Thierry and Simone very much for the hospitality.
